Our darling twins' first Christmas...you can tell they are thrilled! The personalized onesies the twins are wearing were my sister, Shelly and I's inspiration for our Etsy Shop, BasilBerry Designs...Made With Twins in Mind!! We wanted the twins to have matching outfits for my Grandfather's 90th birthday party so the night before the party we made these beauties!! We love them and many others do too!!

1 Month
Awww...so little and certainly adorable! We had a photo shoot in our living room with the twins on the couch...at this age they just lay where ever you put them. Even though they didn't move around it took us an hour and several hundred shots to get any good ones!! Love these precious little babies!!
Monthly Photo Shoot Series
For the next few weeks I will be posting photos of the twins. Every month on the twins' month birthday we had an impromptu photo shoot!! The first few months the photos lacked in the posing and staging aspect but I have to say the photo shoots just get better and better each month! {Not to keep your suspense....I just have to say their 11 month photo shoot is one of my favorites!} I hope you enjoy seeing our little blessing grow up in the next few weeks...come back and visit every few days to see the twins' photos leading up to the "BIG CELEBRATION" Day....the twins' 1st Birthday!!!

Our Twins' Nursery
Vintage Shabby Chic Twin Nursery
I want to share with you the journey of designing our twins' nursery....a room we are very proud of! This small room had little character, a large window on one wall and a closet on another leaving two walls to work with. Living in a small house, this room was our guest bedroom...but now we have to transform this room from a "not so cute" guestroom into a twin nursery "out of a this world"!!
~The Nursery Design~
Our twin nursery is not your ordinary nursery with a teddy bear, sports, or jungle theme it is something very different than that! Soon after becoming pregnant I looked at many nursery designs in magazines, and online and realized that I wanted something that was classy, and followed the deco of the rest of our house. I didn't want you to walk into the room and it scream nursery! {Now please know that I have seen alot of themed nurseries and they look amazing but it is just not for us!} Knowing we were having a boy and a girl I envisioned something neutral not pink and blue even though my mother just thought for sure we would have a "baby" themed nursery with pink and blue...it was not happening in our house! Alot of time was spent looking online and trying to decide what we were wanting to accomplish with the overall "look" of the nursery! I have such a love for vintage items and the shabby chic look, I wanted to incorporate that into the twins' nursery. We did alot to this bedroom before we could actually start calling it a nursery....we removed the popcorn off the ceilings and removed the closet doors and clothes bar from the closet. We also had new carpet installed through out the house. After purchasing fabric we picked out the paint color for the walls and ceiling. We also decided to put a finishing touch to this room with crown molding on the ceiling. With newly painted walls, fresh new carpet and beautiful crown molding this room was starting to look like a nursery!
~The Nursery Furniture~
Black furniture was my dream and that was soon crushed when we found an outstanding buy on a hutch at a scratch and dent baby store sale. The hutch was espresso not dark enough to go with black furniture so it was then when we decided espresso it was!! We had a hutch, ok so what is next, something to put this beautiful hutch on to use as our changing table. Like everything we do we spend alot of time researching to figure out what we really want before we purchase it! After looking at many options we purchased a dining room buffet (we took one of the doors off the hutch for color match) at one of our local furniture stores. It fit perfectly together and was tall enough for both of us not to break our back bending over to change the twins. Since this room was small we wanted to use every bit of the space that we could, so we placed the hutch changing table in the closet. We built three shelves in one corner and placed three clothes bars in the other corner to accommodate for storage. We also added strip lighting in the closet for additional light. It worked out perfectly, one of my favorites in this room!
Cribs...this was very important to me, so we did our normal look around before we bought and found cribs that we loved for a great price! We ordered our cribs from Walmart online...the style is Baby Mod Cadence 4-in-1 Convertible Crib, Espresso. We placed the cribs along one wall side by side giving the room some floor space. I also wanted a big rocking chair and ottoman such as the ones you see at Pottery Barn but our nursery budget would not allow us to purchase it from there so I was on a mission to find the same "look" just less expensive. And I did, and I love it!!! We also ordered the chair and ottoman from Walmart online...the style is Dorel Rocking Chair and Ottoman. The butter cream colored slipcovers coordinates well with the other fabric for the bedding and window treatments. We purchased a small three drawer night stand to place next to the chair for extra storage...and to sit those late night bottles on!!
~The Nursery Bedding and Window Treatments~
We wanted something different, something no one else had so buying from a store or catalog was not our style. My dear friend Betsey {I worked with her at my last job}, she is an amazing seamstress and she offered to make the twins' bedding and window treatments. Matt and I had already been to a fabric store and picked the fabric out but we needed her opinion and measurements. One Saturday Betsey met Matt and I in a town a few hours away at the fabric store to purchase the fabric for the nursery. It was a hoot and a half, we spent several hours there planning it all on paper, measuring fabric and making a plan of attack! We set up one of the cribs at her house so she could use it to measure and make the bedding custom to fit instead of using a pattern. Once she started making everything we actually changed a few things that we first had on paper from the day at the fabric store...it just didn't come together as we had visioned. She has amazing attention to detail and every little thing must be perfect...
The bedding design was the same for each baby, but to make it alittle different Harrison has cording around his bumper pad and Huntleigh has a ruffle around her bumper pad. We used the striped fabric for a straight boxed dust ruffle, and a green and brown paisley design for the bumper pads. The quilt was made out of chocolate brown milky fabric on one side and butter corduroy squares and green and brown paisley print squares used on the bumpers. She also made alittle pillow and embroidered the twins' names on the pillow...for an extra touch of color to the chair. Betsey's husband Wayne made the cornice boards and covered them in a coordinating fabric for the window and above the closet, and we added chocolate brown panel curtains. The cornice boards and chocolate brown curtains give the room a complete put together look. We will forever be grateful to our dear friends Betsey and Wayne for all their love and assistance in making our twins nursery such a dream come true!
~The Vintage Shabby Chic Decorations~
To complete the twins' nursery I wanted to add my love for vintage and shabby chic decor. I went to my favorite local antique shop to see what they might have to go in the nursery. I saw several things that I fell in love with...one being a three tier wire rack that could hold toys, books, and blankets. I was in love with this rack, but didn't have that much left over in my budget to spend on such an item. I was beside myself, wondering how could I get this rack...could I sell something, could I borrow the money...oh my I "HAD" to have it!!! Several weeks went by and I went back to the antique shop to get a few other items I had saw to complete the nursery and while I was there I went down the aisle to make sure the three tired wire rack was still there...it was but had no price tag on it, it had been SOLD!!! I just cried standing in the shop, telling the clerk..."no one would love it as much as I did"! A few weeks later Matt and I were at church and a friend of ours told Matt she had a gift for us...when I went in the hallway there sat the three tired wire rack that I wanted so much...I couldn't believe my eyes!!
I wanted the twins' names above their beds along with a cute phrase I came up with on the other wall, so I contacted a representative from Uppercase Living. She came to our home and measured the space and gave me a few color options for the lettering. It turned out just as I had planned...I love the vinyl lettering from Uppercase Living!!
On the wall with the cute phrase, "these little blessings hold the keys to our hearts" I made a hanging picture frame out of a curtain rod, ribbon and vintage estate sale frames {that I painted Heirloom White and used brown craft paint to give it an antique look}...adding two cream colored wire keys I found at the antique store. On the small wall above the rocking chair I hung a large ornate frame {that I painted Heirloom White and used brown craft paint to give it an antique look} with two smaller frames inside with pictures of my ultrasound. I also purchased a metal "Jesus Loves Me" sign that sits on the night stand next to the chair. And lastly above the twins' crib along with their names I hung a metal scroll in the center to give more definition to that wall {I know you are saying...your crazy for hanging that above their beds, believe me I know...!!!!}
With all the twins' clothes washed, ironed and hung in the closet, folded in the drawers, and diapers and wipes stocked neatly on the shelves our nursery is ready for the arrival of our twins!!
Our dream nursery is complete, and it is perfect down to every little detail! We wouldn't change a thing, we love the way it all came together one piece at a time!

{Guest Post}....My Sister's Story of the Twins' Birth
My sister Shelly shares her story of the twins' birth...emotions, love, and happiness filled my sister's heart when the twins were born. Forever changing her life and bringing us even closer as sisters! I hope you enjoy her story of that special day! ~ Vintage Momma
The date had been set for the birth of the twins, and my plane ticket was bought… now can Kristy make it to that day!! I flew out after work on Tuesday night, Matt’s parents picked me up at the airport and we made the 2 hour drive to my sister’s. Got there late around 1 a.m. and we had to be at the hospital really early. I don’t think we slept at all!! Kristy and I showered, got ready (laughing that we were both wearing black leggings) and Matt packed the car. We were all so excited we couldn’t stand it! Took the short drive to the hospital and got checked in. Kristy was scheduled to be the first
C-section of the day. Soon after getting settled in the nurse informed us that there were a lot of babies being born and that we would probably have to wait till 10:00 a.m. before they took her back to start.
Matt’s parents arrived at the hospital and soon after my Uncle Stan and Aunt Nina; we just patiently waited for them to take Kristy back. Finally a little before 10 it was time, they wheeled Kristy down the hall and Matt followed. The rest of us had to wait in the waiting room for what seemed like an eternity! We were getting a little antsy after an hour and half had past, started asking the nurses and they told us about how when a baby is born a little lullaby song is played over the intercom. By this time we were all standing in the hallway, we heard one lullaby and waited to hear the second one…it didn’t come. I was thinking the worst and tears filled my eyes, just praying for the twins and for my sister. Finally, heard it and we realized that Matt and the twins were already in the nursery, they had the blinds closed but we could barely peek through and see them. Kristy was in the operating room, but I called my mom and told her the babies were here!!!! It was taking a long time for Kristy to get out of surgery and not knowing what was going on with her, which at that time I am happy I didn’t know because I would have been a wreck!! So very thankful that she made it out of surgery and had two healthy babies!!!
My sister was pretty out of it after surgery so she needed to rest. It was already planned I would stay at the hospital the whole time she was there; I didn’t want to miss a second of the twins. So the first night I stayed with my sister. The nurses took the babies to the nursery for just a little bit, but after that it was all on us! By the end of the morning I was saying “just have to feed them, change them, and love them!!”
On Thursday they moved Kristy to a different room, we had visitors and the twins stayed in the room with us all day. Thursday night Matt stayed with us and both of us took turns changing and feeding the babies, Matt and I were such a great team! We tried to let Kristy get some rest, but she never did go to sleep. We all had a long night! On Friday my mom and Stanley arrived, and it gave Matt and I a break to go take a short nap, this was the only time I left the hospital, I even showered at the hospital!
Friday night was my last night to be there and I held the twins in my arms all night long drifting in and out, but mostly just wanting to hold on to the precious moments before I had to go home.
On Saturday I packed my things, took a shower and Matt’s parents and I left for the airport. I cried all the way home! The entire experience of all of us being together bonded us in such a way that I can’t even begin to put into words. I never knew that I would feel the way I do about the twins, they mean the world to me and have changed my life forever. I can’t wait till they can say “Auntie Shelly”!!

Our Twins...Birth Story
Today, September 6...a month away from our twins' first birthday!
I just want to share with you, as I sit down to reflect on that day in October...with a lump in my throat, tears running down my cheeks and my heart full of a happiness. The emotion I feel today is the same emotion I felt that day they were born. This was such a life changing experience for Matt and I, and will be forever grateful for our twins!
A fall October morning, up early and out the door to the hospital with my wonderful husband and my amazing sister, Shelly! I was so happy that I made it to my planned c-section delivery date, and was able to have everyone there with me as we planned for many months. After arriving to the Labor and Delivery unit, the nursing staff prepped me for my surgery and hooked me up to all the monitors. I have had surgeries before so I was not really fearful of the surgery but I just wanted healthy babies and no complications. My sister was so excited, she sat on the bed with me waiting and watching the monitors. After getting settled in, Matt's parents arrived...then my Aunt Nina and Uncle Stan(my late father's brother), and our pastor came to pray with us before my c-section. My mother and her husband, Stanley awaiting that phone call while still at home in Georgia. I was going to be the first c-section of the morning, but I got pushed back so the anticipation was increasing as we waited. Matt, very nervous of course, dressed in his blue scrubs stood by my side and prayed over me before I went into the OR. The time had come....our doctor and anesthesiologist came into my room and asked me if I had any questions and down the hall we went, through the double doors, knowing our little miracles would arrive into this world soon!!
I got up on the c-section table (now understand I am a tall, big girl anyways then you add a twin belly on me and I am alittle out of portion). They wanted me to lean over and hunch my back like a cat so he could place my spinal tap in my back....needless to say I was too top heavy and was not able to hold myself up. So a nurse (half my size) got up on the table and straddled facing me and I had to rest my head in her chest (alittle too close for comfort). He stuck me several times and he could not get it...and it hurt like you know what every time he stuck me. The nurses decided to put my feet up on two stools and place another nurse on the floor behind the nurse straddling the table to hold her up and he stuck me several more times. On the fifth stick he said if I don't get this one we will have to put you under general anesthetic and that is very dangerous so we have to get it this time. He rolled my shoulders, all nurses still holding me up and with tears running down my face and screaming because of the pain, he FINALLY GOT IT!!!! Quickly legs up on the table and my two doctors started working on me. Matt anxiously waiting in the hallway was escorted in by a nurse, I was so happy to see him!! Soon after they laid me down my blood pressure sky rocketed to 240/196...so the anesthesiologist gave me a bolus of meds. The doctors were making progress when one of the doctors was up at the crown of my fundus pushing one of the babies down and she slipped and fell off her stool. She was not hurt, she got right back up and kept on pushing(which by the way was very painful). Before they got the babies out my blood pressure was still increasing so he gave me more meds. And then....
On October 6, 2010 at 11:28 am Harrison Parker Hughes was born 6lbs. 15.4 oz and 19 inches long, and at 11:29 am Huntleigh Paige Hughes was born 6lbs. 0.1 oz. and 18.5 inches long!! Our little blessings had arrived, they both came into this world screaming and crying...what a joyful noise for Momma and Daddy!! The hospital played two sweet little lullabies over the intercom so everyone in the hospital knew there were babies born!!
Our family patiently waiting in the waiting room, wanting to know that everyone was healthy and doing fine!! I got to see both of the babies right before they quickly took them to the nursery, they were precious and looked just like us!! I will never forget the feeling of a true miracle from God!! Matt went with the twins to the nursery and stayed by their side the whole time the nurses were taking care of them. He was so proud and very emotional as we all were...it was so unbelievable that finally after all these years we had two babies, the babies we had always dreamed of!!
I was still in the OR, having some difficulty with my blood pressure and also some pain while they closed my incision. I asked if I could have something for pain, and the only thing they could give me was some "laughing gas". After I was back in recovery, the anesthesiologist came to see me and bent down and whispered in my ear so sweetly, " Honey, I love you and please promise me you will not do this again because you will not make it the next time!" I had no idea up until that moment I was in such danger! God was watching over me as He so faithfully did through my whole pregnancy. As I went back to my room, I saw my family looking through the nursery window at the our precious twins!! I was very drowsy once I got back to my room from all the meds I received during surgery...but all I could think about was getting to hold my little babies! The nurse brought in Harrison and Huntleigh, laid them both in my arms...they were so precious, beautiful little angels!
I have to admit, that afternoon and evening are alittle bit of a blur...my sister stayed with me that night and Matt went home to get some much needed rest. Shelly was amazing, tending to the twins' every need and also helping me recover from my c-section. On Thursday morning, Matt came back to the hospital really early....and like Shelly he never left my side! It took both of them to take care of the twins as they never went back to the nursery the whole time we were at the hospital!
My mom and Stanley arrived on Friday, they were in love with the twins at first sight! I was very, very emotional the whole time I was in the hospital...I needed sleep and I just couldn't close my eyes...I was too worried about my sweet babies. It was a long few days and nights while in the hospital. Matt's parents and my sister Shelly left to go back home on Saturday around noon...I had a "fall apart" moment when my sister left! We had shared this special time in our lives together and I just couldn't bare the thought of her leaving us! Matt and I were so hopeful that we would all be discharged that afternoon to go home...we were not expecting any set backs but the twins were jaundice and our doctor wanted them to stay under the billirubin lights for at least 24 hours before going home. I was devastated, when they discharged me but not the twins. Matt and I told our nurse, that we were not leaving the hospital(even though our house was less than 2 minutes away), they were so gracious to allow us to stay in the hospital in my same room with the babies while they were under the lights. Sunday afternoon, we got word that the babies billirubin levels were dropping and we could take them HOME!!! My mom and Stanley were at the hospital to help us get home.
Home....with our precious twins, let another journey begin!
